On September 18, 2020, I was infected with COVID-19 and was hospitalized for 3 days. I recovered quickly and slowly regained my vitality. I had my laboratory blood work checked on January 9, 2021, and my kidney function was still normal with a creatinine level of 1.0, although there were traces of protein in my urine. I received my first dose of the COVID vaccine on December 23, 2020, and the second dose on January 11, 2021. My kidney function remained normal from the time I got infected with COVID until the end of December 2020.
However, I began noticing slight neuropathy. Occasionally, I would feel a needle-pricking sensation in my feet, but it wasn’t severe. Two weeks after receiving my second dose of the vaccine, my vision became blurry very suddenly. I also experienced a fall while walking to my job, as if the transmission of signals to my legs had failed. Although I fell, I was able to get up. Over time, the numbness in my legs and feet progressed, and I began having difficulty sleeping due to the numbness, especially at night and when the weather was cold.
I saw a nerve specialist who diagnosed me with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), congestive heart failure, and blurry vision. These symptoms started about two weeks after my second dose of the vaccine. I now realize that I am one of the rare cases experiencing a side effect similar to Guillain-Barré syndrome, but in my case, it’s CIDP. I suffer from terrible numbness every day.
My personal explanation (not from the nerve specialist) is that I developed molecular mimicry, where my body mistakes the mRNA vaccine from Pfizer for a molecule in my nerve cells called neurofascin. As a result, my body produced anti-neurofascin antibodies to attack the foreign molecule, neurofascin, which in turn destroyed the neurofascin in my peripheral nerves, causing CIDP.
On March 23, 2021, my creatinine level increased to 1.23, and two months later, it rose to 2, then 5, and eventually 7, leading to dialysis in September 2022. I continued to suffer from the neuropathy caused by CIDP. My blood pressure was averaging 200/110. In an effort to improve my health, I decided to change my diet and stick to it strictly. For three months, I ate 2 to 3 cans of sardines in tomato sauce, squeezed with lemon and a pinch of Himalayan salt, twice a day. I ate nothing but sardines and 4 teaspoons of rice daily for 3 months straight.
Here are the results: my blood pressure normalized to 110/70, and my neuropathy changed from being unbearable to tolerable. I can now sleep better at night. Although there is still some numbness, I can now sleep without needing a foot massage. I believe the key besides omega 3 was eating only 4 grams of rice per meal and avoiding vegetable oils or any hidden partially hydrogenated oils.
