Fruit Intake

Discover how many fruits you should eat for optimal health.

Fruits have long been marketed as healthy due to their anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, polyphenols, and flavonoids, which are said to help fight free radicals and balance reactive oxygen species in the body. This scientific reasoning has been widely promoted by the fruit industry, but much of it has been exaggerated to boost profits. The fruit industry often prioritizes its own financial gain rather than genuinely focusing on your health, and they fail to emphasize the potential negative effects of fruit consumption when eaten in excess.

Take, for example, the popular saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While this phrase is widely believed to be based on health advice, it was actually coined as part of a marketing campaign in Wales to promote the apple industry—not from a health standpoint. In reality, apples can be worse for you than a can of soda. Why? An apple contains approximately 25 grams of carbohydrates. Anything over 4 grams of carbohydrates consumed at one time can be converted into sorbitol through the polyol pathway, which is then converted into fructose and uric acid. These conversion products can cause significant harm to our cells over time.

When consuming fruits, it is important to choose those with a low glycemic index, such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Additionally, it is crucial to keep your carbohydrate intake to a total of 4 grams at a time. For example, if you’ve already consumed carbohydrates from rice, pasta, or bread, you should wait 3-4 hours before eating high-glycemic fruits, such as one slice of ripe mango.

However, if you are physically active and not sedentary, you can generally eat more than 4 grams of carbohydrates, as your body will use the energy more efficiently due to your activity level.

I learned the ideal fruit intake for my health. Highly recommend!
